I’ve always written songs on the guitar but these were written on the piano. Keyboards used to be my main instrument, so I’ve gone back to my roots, which is interesting as many of the lyrics are autobiographical. I’ve tried to find things that are universal, things that everyone can relate to. Birth, acrimonious first marriages, happy-ever-after second marriages, death. You know, the big stuff. I’ve also tried to incorporate some of my poetry into the songs. I’ve found that interesting and challenging, because song lyrics and poems are very different animals. It’s quite a rocky and poppy album. I’ve been listening to a lot of Cardiacs. I love the way they mix up different rhythms, time signatures and key changes into their songs. So I’ve tried to incorporate that freewheeling style into my playing. It’s very different from my previous albums, I hope you’ll like it.
